nextartspaceartist: Philip Klingensmith, 2011 (Oil stick, pastel, and pen on paper) “My most recent works are oil stick and pen portraits of participants involved in the Mountain Meadow Massacre of 1857 (the murder of 151 men, women, and children by a Mormon militia and its subsequent cover-up by the leaders of the church) and the WTC terrorist attacks. Since both events took place on September 11, I am looking to connect these two American tragedies under one banner: the effects of religious fanaticism. I grew up Mormon so most of my work is centered around unearthing and deciphering the history of Mormonism and how it applies to my life in the present as an ‘ex-Mormon’.” -Gregorio Racadio.
